Bibliophilia

Laurie over at Three Dog Blog has read a LOT of books this year and she lists them in her most recent post. She asked which ones on her list we’ve read and, surprisingly since we seem to like a lot of the same types of books, I’ve only read one - BORN STANDING UP, by Steve Martin which I enjoyed tremendously.

However, there are some on Laurie’s list which are on my Greedy List, including:

UNACCUSTOMED EARTH by Jhumpa Lahiri (I would like to know what you thought of this, Laurie. I’ve loved her other writing, but have heard mixed reviews about this one…)

AND WHEN DID YOU LAST SEE YOUR FATHER? by Blake Morrison

THE STORY OF CHICAGO MAY, by Nuala O’Faolain

THE THIRD ANGEL by Alice Hoffman

Also on my Greedy List are:

THE GLASS CASTLE - Jeannette Walls
THE FLORIST’S DAUGHTER - Patricia Hampl
THE GIRL WITH NO SHADOW - Joanne Harris
THE WOMAN’S DAILY IRONY SUPPLEMENT - Judy Gruen
WHEN YOU ARE ENGULFED IN FLAMES - David Sedaris

But they will have to wait until I finish reading the pile of books next to my bed.

What have I read this year? Well, take a look in my Amazon store under the Books & Things Shop header. My little shop contains only books I have read and loved and maybe, from time to time, a few other items I feel confident in personally recommending. Books currently listed in the shop represent this year’s reading as pretty much anything I’ve read prior to this year is IN STORAGE.

I’m going to write a book called My Life is in Storage.

So, what have you been reading?

  1. Judy Gruen Says:

I am flattered that my book, The Women’s Daily Irony Supplement, is on your “greedy” list. I assume that means you really want it! I hope you have half as much fun reading it as I had writing it, and do let me know what you thought of it after!

In the meantime, I invite you to sample some more of my work on the Off My Noodle page of http://www.judygruen.com. That’s not greedy, that’s just fun, for free!
    Have a wonderful summer.

I am an English lit major, and so sometimes reading books is exhausting. Still, I know *exactly* the feeling you’re talking about of getting completely lost in a book–brain massage (nicely put:). ..

So, aside from the John Milton and Jane Austen, etc, one book I absolutely loved this last summer was Haven Kimmel’s “She got up Off the Couch” (sorry, can’t figure out how to do italics!) I recommend it for anyone who has ever been through childhood! MY book group discusses it here:
